A moderate, community-agreed policy for LLM use in astrophysics

Develop a community-agreed and enforceable moderate policy framework governing the use of large language models in astrophysics that avoids both fully automated production and full prohibition.

Background

After rejecting both extreme policies—full embrace (“let-them-cook”) and full prohibition (“ban-and-punish”)—the author explicitly expresses uncertainty about identifying and implementing a viable middle path.

The challenge is not only conceptual but also practical, requiring community agreement and enforceability while maintaining trust, rigor, efficiency, novelty, and academic freedom.

Is there a middle way? There must be! But I am not sure I can find it. And even if I can find it, I don't see how we, as a community, could agree to it (and even less police or enforce it).
