Hyperbolicity of Force-Free Electrodynamics

Abstract: We analyze the equations of relativistic magnetized plasma dynamics in the limiting case that electromagnetic stress-energy is dominant over pressure and rest mass energy density. The naive formulation of these equations is shown to be not hyperbolic. Modifying the equations by terms that vanish for all physical solutions, we obtain a symmetric hyperbolic evolution system, which should exhibit improved numerical behavior.
