4. Intrinsic Dimension Adaptivity and Geometry-Aware Trees

Adaptive geometric partitioning can be tailored to data structure rather than ambient space:

  • Covariance-dimension adaptivity: Trees—especially those built by top-eigenvector (PCA), random projections, or 2-means centroids—shrink average cell diameter at rates determined by local data covariance-dimension dd (not the ambient DD): after O(dlog(1/ε))O(d\log(1/\varepsilon)) levels, diameters drop by factor ε\varepsilon (Verma et al., 2012).
