The hallmark of such strategies is the explicit coupling of (possibly learned or data-driven) sample density control with mechanisms for mixing, exchanging, or otherwise combining several proposal processes, yielding significant efficiency and robustness benefits.
1. Theoretical Foundations and Motivations
A density-adaptive hybrid sampling method draws on theoretical foundations including importance sampling (IS) and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) for Bayesian computation, design of experiments, and sparse recovery. The driving principle is to adaptively align sampling densities with key features of the integration/estimation target: regions of high posterior mass, zones of signal variation, sharp boundaries, or uncertainty contours. Hybridization comes into play in two main senses:
