4. Latent Preference Evolution in Panel Discrete-Choice Data

Evolution of preference segments—modality styles or taste classes—can be modeled as latent Markov sequences, with switching governed by both observed covariates and structural feedback (consumer surplus from available alternatives). In the framework of hidden Markov models with discrete-choice kernels (Zarwi et al., 2017), each agent occupies a latent state s{1,,S}s\in\{1,\dots,S\} (e.g., “driver,” “bus user,” etc.), each associated with specific sensitivity parameters in the multinomial logit kernel. Empirical applications clearly reveal both population-level redistribution of modality styles (e.g., in response to major public transit reforms) and high-frequency individual switching, with pronounced within-segment inertia modulated by exogenous system shocks (Zarwi et al., 2017).

5. Pairwise and Higher-Order Markov Chain Choice Mechanisms

Generalizations beyond independent agent-level Markovian dynamics are embodied in pairwise and higher-order Markov chain constructions. The Pairwise Choice Markov Chain (PCMC) model defines, for any choice set SS, a continuous-time Markov chain over SS with global generator QQ, stationary distribution πS\pi_S solving πSQS=0\pi_S^\top Q_S=0, and choice probability assignment πS(i)\pi_S(i) for iSi\in S (Ragain et al., 2016). Identification of key timescales—individual switching, collective mode switching, recruitment/inertia—enables clear regime classification and asymptotic analysis. The exact finite-NN solutions provide finely resolved transient dynamics, revealing phenomena inaccessible to continuous approximations, such as discrete resonance modes and finite-population switching rates.


Discrete-choice evolution mechanisms thus provide a rigorous, unified mathematical foundation for noisy, path-dependent, and structure-adaptive decision processes across agent-based modeling, econometric inference, and algorithmic optimization.
