2. Sequential Design for Extreme Quantiles under Binary Sampling

For applications where only binary (failure/success) data can be obtained at specified stress levels—typical in material reliability and fatigue testing—the XD strategy revolves around efficiently estimating small exceedance quantiles qpq_p for p1p \ll 1.

Splitting Strategy

Direct estimation of qpq_p by exhaustive sampling at sqps \approx q_p is infeasible. XD circumvents this by splitting pp as a product of moderate conditional probabilities αj\alpha_j over mm stages:

3. XD Workflows in Offshore Structural Engineering

In offshore wind turbine design, the estimation of extreme wave loads is a paradigm case for XD. The DeRisk database provides a high-dimensional repository of fully nonlinear wave kinematics, validated experimentally and parametrized for fast retrieval and Froude scaling.
