In quantum information science, such schemes allow the probabilistic construction of large entangled structures or robust logical operations via localized “fusion” measurements, which entangle or project subcomponents, often followed by error correction or adaptive strategies. In classical estimation and sensor systems, measurement-level fusion denotes methodologies processing raw or intermediate measurement data—rather than post-processed tracks or state vectors—to enhance information extraction, reduce bias, or increase resistance to uncertainties. Fusion measurement-based schemes thus occupy central roles in quantum computation with photonics, sensor networks, error correction, and hybrid inference frameworks.

1. Quantum Encoded Fusion Measurements: Principles and Construction

In photonic quantum computation, the leading approach to scalable, loss-tolerant architectures employs fusion measurement-based schemes to interconnect finite resource states into large, fault-tolerant cluster states. The canonical construction replaces each physical “edge” or “qubit” that would be fused with a logical block encoded via a quantum error-correcting code (QECC). Specifically, the generalized Shor (parity) code parameterized by (n,m)(n, m) encodes one logical qubit as

The block structure, in conjunction with active feed-forward, allows fusion operations to be nearly deterministic and significantly suppresses the impact of photon losses on logical observables (Song et al., 2024).

Encoded fusion measurements are engineered via modular, linear-optical circuits utilizing three BSM variants:

Within each block, photons from two encoded qubits are paired, and the fusion protocol proceeds by iteratively applying BψB_\psi up to jm1j \leq m-1 times, followed by B+B_+ or BB_- to refine “letter” and “sign” outcomes, with the results of initial steps dictating subsequent measurement choices (active feed-forward). Logical fusion success is declared if any block achieves a full fusion without block-level failures; otherwise, further rounds are invoked or the event is flagged as a logical erasure. The entire procedure, including feed-forward, operates in a bounded-depth time frame per block, and allows fusion success probability to approach unity with modest increases in photonic overhead (block sizes) (Song et al., 2024).

3. Fusion Schemes in Graph-State Generation and Fault-Tolerant Architectures

Fusion-based schemes are foundational in constructing three-dimensional Raussendorf-Harrington-Goyal (RHG) lattices and other topological resource states. Each cell in the tiling—via either 4-star (GHZ-based) or 6-ring (cycle-graph) configurations—is interconnected by encoded Bell fusions, forming logical check operators consistent with the surface code. The encoded-fusion approach supports efficient implementation using only finite-sized entangled states and modular optics, sidestepping the requirement for resource-intensive large single-shot cluster states typical in earlier MBQC models (Song et al., 2024, Bartolucci et al., 2021).

Threshold analyses—incorporating per-photon transmissivity η\eta, block size (n,m)(n, m), and fusion protocol depth jj—find that optimizing these parameters yields dramatic improvements: for (n,m)=(2,2)(n, m)=(2, 2) (6-ring) the photon loss threshold reaches 4.8%4.8\%, and for (n,m)=(7,4)(n, m)=(7, 4) up to 14.0%14.0\%. These thresholds are an order of magnitude higher than non-encoded (bare) fusions, directly enabling greater resilience to losses and errors (Song et al., 2024).

4. Error Models, Loss Mitigation, and Performance Analysis

Error processes in fusion measurement-based schemes are categorized as:

  • Photon loss: Transforms a fusion into an erasure event. With encoding, only a block-level erasure (probability (1η2)m(1-\eta^2)^m) is induced, and logical erasure occurs only if all nn blocks fail.

Monte Carlo simulations within hardware-agnostic and optical noise models confirm that the encoded-fusion approach can tolerate per-photon loss rates exceeding 10%10\%, while non-encoded schemes typically fail below the 1%1\% level. Overall, this demonstrates a $5$–10×10\times gain in loss tolerance and a corresponding increase in operational fidelity (Song et al., 2024, Bartolucci et al., 2021).

5. Elementary Resource States and Hierarchical Network Assembly

Two photonic graph states serve as the elemental units:

  • The 4-star (a $4$-qubit GHZ state with one qubit pre-measured) and
  • The 6-ring ($6$-qubit cycle).

Encoded fusion replaces each vertex in these graphs with an (n,m)(n, m)-block, producing “encoded 4-star” and “encoded 6-ring” states containing $4nm$ and $6nm$ photons, respectively. These large resource states have modular assembly paths from 3-photon GHZ seeds via type-II fusion steps of bounded depth, enabling scalable construction and compatibility with quantum emitter platforms (Song et al., 2024).

6. Broader Methodological and Practical Implications

The encoded-fusion measurement-based methodology fundamentally advances the performance envelope of photonic quantum computing architectures. Its strengths include:

  • Modular, repetition-code-based logical encoding supporting high post-fusion success probabilities with minimal resource scaling.
  • Linear-optical circuitry use, accessible with current photonic integration technologies, combined with bounded-depth active feed-forward.
  • Capability to be integrated into fault-tolerant network topologies, such as the RHG lattice, using only small resource units.
  • High error thresholds under realistic, hardware-agnostic, and photon-loss-dominated models.

A plausible implication is that this architecture points the way toward scalable, robust photonic quantum computing platforms that remain practical under non-ideal component performance or elevated loss rates, a property not shared by bare (non-encoded) fusion or prior cluster-state models (Song et al., 2024, Bartolucci et al., 2021).

7. Relationship to Classical Measurement-Based Fusion

While the encoded-fusion measurement-based scheme is a quantum information framework, measurement-level fusion concepts also underpin advanced methodologies in classical information processing—for instance, via the fusion of interval-valued sensor measurements with conflict-detection weighting (Wei et al., 2018). Both domains share the principle of integrating multiplicity and redundancy at the measurement level rather than at the post-processing or inference stage, offering enhanced robustness and fidelity.
