Householder Reflections: Fundamentals & Applications

The determinant of vv0 is vv1, and composition of vv2 reflectors vv3 yields a general orthogonal matrix vv4 with vv5 (Tomczak et al., 2016, Mhammedi et al., 2016).

Geometrically, vv6 reflects vectors across a hyperplane normal to vv7, reversing the component along vv8 and leaving orthogonal components invariant. This property holds in real, complex, and homogeneous (projective) coordinates, as exploited in geometric representations and quantum coset decompositions (Lu et al., 2013, Cabrera et al., 2010).

2. Efficient Algorithmic Construction and Application

3. Householder Reflections in Dictionary Learning and Matrix Factorization

In structured orthogonal dictionary learning, Householder reflections provide a minimal-parametric representation for orthogonal dictionaries: x∈Rn\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{R}^n2 where x∈Rn\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{R}^n3 is an unknown unit vector and x∈Rn\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{R}^n4 is a binary or sparse matrix (Dash et al., 2024, Dash et al., 2024). Recovery of x∈Rn\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{R}^n5 and x∈Rn\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{R}^n6 can be exact using only two columns of x∈Rn\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{R}^n7 when x∈Rn\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{R}^n8 is binary (up to the sign ambiguity x∈Rn\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{R}^n9). For Bernoulli-type random x\mathbf{x}0, approximate recovery in the x\mathbf{x}1 sense is possible in x\mathbf{x}2 time, provided x\mathbf{x}3 columns. Moment-matching algorithms avoid costly SVDs, giving optimal sample complexity and computational savings.

Products of a few Householder reflectors (x\mathbf{x}4) generalize the dictionary class: x\mathbf{x}5 with algorithms that sequentially recover the reflectors by exploiting empirical row means, sample moments, and peeling off factors, maintaining computational cost at x\mathbf{x}6 (Dash et al., 2024, Rusu et al., 2016). This approach outperforms nonstructured methods in sample-limited regimes and provides spectral condition guarantees for local optimality in learning (Rusu, 2018).

4. Neural Architectures and Adaptation with Householder Reflections

Householder reflections are central to efficient orthogonal parameterization of neural network layers. In RNNs, transition matrices x\mathbf{x}7 can be enforced as products of Householder reflections,

providing exact orthogonality, perfect norm-preservation, and computational efficiency (cost x\mathbf{x}9 per sequence step for length-e1e_10 factorizations) (Mhammedi et al., 2016, Likhosherstov et al., 2020).

Compact WY (CWY) or T-CWY transforms enable highly parallel, GPU-optimized computation. The compound orthogonal matrix for e1e_11 reflections is written
