This result establishes that neural networks, with modest depth and scalable width, can efficiently and provably approximate decision boundaries in high dimensions, provided the boundary belongs locally to the (Fourier-analytic) Barron class. The neural boundary prediction paradigm allows for efficient approximation and estimation in high dimensions, superior generalization under varying and partial boundary conditions, and improved interpretability in inverse problems. Practical implications include:

  • The necessity and sufficiency of shallow (e.g., 3-layer) neural architectures with width scaling like m1/(1+α)m^{1/(1+\alpha)} (for sample size mm) for regular boundaries (Caragea et al., 2020).
  • The criticality of multi-scale, multi-task, and physics-aware feature selection for empirical performance.
  • The unique capabilities of neural operators and decoders to deliver instantaneous field solutions for arbitrary boundary excitations, outpacing meshed or PINN models for parametric BCs and facilitating rapid surrogate development (Lim et al., 2024, Ye et al., 14 Apr 2025).

Nevertheless, challenges remain, such as stability in the presence of noisy or partial boundaries, the design of boundary encoders for high-dimensional or heterogeneous data, and the integration of explicit PDE constraints for physical interpretability and generalization when extending to broader domains.

Neural boundary prediction, underpinned by rigorous mathematical theory and informed by domain-specific methodologies, constitutes a fundamental toolkit for modern learning-based approaches to boundary-sensitive problems across vision, physical modeling, and structural inference.
