A key distinguishing factor lies in the psychological construct targeted: whereas active BCIs demand intentional modulation of brain activity, passive BCIs focus on endogenous or stimulus-evoked neural responses that manifest during unstructured or ecologically valid tasks.

2. Hardware, Data Acquisition, and Preprocessing

Passive BCIs utilize a range of sensor modalities, from non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) to intracranial field recordings (iEEG, ECoG, sEEG). Passive BCIs increasingly employ collaborative or ensemble paradigms, especially when targeting emergent states in group settings.

Passive BCIs provide a framework for monitoring cognitive, affective, or perceptual states in settings ranging from surveillance and remote agent teaming (Solon et al., 2018), speech perception research (Fodor et al., 2024), to emotional monitoring in consumer settings (Faruk et al., 2022).

Quantitative highlights include:

  • Visual-interest detection in complex video tasks: Ensemble cBCI achieves AUCs up to 0.87 (No-Fog) and 0.77 (Fog), with significant gains as group size increases (Solon et al., 2018).
  • Speech perception decoding: Best val-MSE for mapping passive iEEG to mel-spectrogram is $0.6520$ (Fc-DNN, subject with optimal speech-area coverage) (Fodor et al., 2024). No intelligible speech could be reconstructed; performance is limited by weak and diffuse neural signatures in passive paradigms.
  • Affective state decoding with commercial EEG: Naïve Bayes attains up to 69%69\% accuracy (κ41%\kappa \approx 41\%) for emotion labeling, although small sample size and absence of transparent features are limiting (Faruk et al., 2022).

Limitations are common: artifact contamination, anatomical coverage, misalignment between brain and stimulus dynamics, small datasets, and opaque feature engineering hinder generalizability and robustness. Proprietary systems present further issues due to lack of transparency in signal processing and metric computation.

7. Outlook and Research Directions

Future development of passive BCIs involves advances in artifact rejection (e.g., ICA, adaptive filtering), multi-modal integration (adding video, behavioral, or physiological cues), improved model architectures (attention mechanisms, transformers), and larger, ecologically valid datasets (Fodor et al., 2024). Real-world deployment will require robust signal quality monitoring, real-time classifier adaptation, and transparent feature representations (Faruk et al., 2022). Collaborative and ensemble paradigms, as demonstrated in cBCI systems, represent a promising strategy for improving passive state detection reliability in complex and noisy environments (Solon et al., 2018).

Continued exploration of passive paradigms is expected to deepen understanding of involuntary neural responses during rich, real-world interactions and to broaden the scope of BCI applications beyond traditional assistive communication or device control.
