E3 Interface Specification for Real-Time Sensing Data Exposure

Design and standardize the E3 interface specification at the DU, including precise data formats, access patterns, and isolation mechanisms, to enable real-time user-plane sensing data exposure without disrupting the communication pipeline.

Background

The paper proposes an E3 interface to expose I/Q samples, CSI, and SRS to dApps co-located with the DU to meet sensing latency and bandwidth requirements. However, concrete specification details—such as data formats, access semantics, and isolation from the time-critical communication pipeline—are not yet defined.

The authors explicitly state that further design work on the E3 interface is an open challenge.

Several open challenges remain. On the technical side, synchronization across distributed sensing nodes is critical for coherent multi-node processing, and the E3 interface specification—data formats, access patterns, isolation from the communication pipeline—requires further design.
