Extension of quasi-periodic diversity patterns to other fossil groups

Investigate whether quasi-periodic repetition in increasing diversity is present among fossil organism groups other than radiolarians.

Background

The paper proposes that periodic changes in cosmic-ray flux linked to the Solar system’s Galactic oscillation may influence diversification patterns in siliceous marine microplankton. Radiolarians show putative quasi-periodic increases in diversity under this scenario.

The authors suggest this pattern could extend to other fossil groups but acknowledge that this possibility has not been systematically examined.

References

The quasi-periodic repetition in increasing diversity might also be seen among other groups of fossil organisms, although this has not yet been studied in detail.
