Workmanship of Learning: Embedding Craftsmanship Values in AI-Integrated Educational Tools

Abstract: Generative AI's emphasis on automation and efficiency challenges design education, where learning is grounded in exploration, reflection, and responsibility. This work introduces AI Craftsmanship, a value-oriented framework drawing on craftsmanship traditions that emphasize risk, rhythm, and care as central to learning through making. Through a Research through Design (RtD) approach, we designed an AI-integrated creative coding tool embedding these values into interactions and interface rather than outcomes. The tool supports designers learning generative pattern-making with p5.js by constraining AI, encouraging iterative experimentation, and foregrounding reflection. We studied the tool with five design practitioners through one-hour sessions and semi-structured interviews. Findings show craft values manifest unevenly: risk and rhythm shape early sense-making, while care emerges through reflective practices. Emergent values -- such as aesthetic judgment and confidence -- also motivated learning. AI Craftsmanship mediates values, tools, and materials, offering a value-driven perspective on designing AI systems for reflective, responsible, craft-informed learning in design education.

  • Care was nascent but detectable in annotation and reflective capture. Documentation was valued for supporting attentiveness; longer engagements are expected to lead to deeper responsibility and critical evaluation of AI-generated artifacts.

Further, emergent values not originally conceptualized, such as aesthetic judgment and confidence, proved integral in motivating risk-taking and iterative experimentation. Figure 1

Practical and Theoretical Implications

The findings underscore that embedding values requires not only technical constraints but the creation of conditional environments facilitating situated negotiation. This reframes the role of AI in educational practice, calling for interfaces that operationalize ethical and tacit values through interaction. Further, the identification of emergent experiential values (e.g., aesthetic judgment, confidence) suggests future frameworks should accommodate expanded sets of motivational and ethical considerations.

Future Directions

The preliminary empirical study establishes foundational insights into value mediation but is temporally limited. Future research should involve longitudinal studies to trace the evolution of care, responsibility, and judgment over extended engagement, and investigate the applicability of AI Craftsmanship in other creative and educational domains. There is potential for integrating adaptive AI, capable of dynamically calibrating its level of intervention based on learner trajectory and demonstrated agency, further advancing situated responsibility and reflective learning.

Conclusion

The paper delineates a rigorous value-oriented approach for designing AI-integrated educational tools, operationalizing risk, rhythm, and care as central to craft-informed learning. Empirical findings indicate values unfold non-uniformly and are shaped by constrained AI mediation, and that additional values emerge, requiring ongoing framework expansion.
